Volunteers

JAC wishes to express her profound gratitude to all our volunteers who have stood together with us. Without you, JAC would not have been where we are today. We really appreciate you.  Currently, JAC has a team of local volunteer artists who dedicate their time and talents to the mission of JAC, and are largely responsible for teaching the weekly art workshops within the five JAC branches.

International Volunteer Program

JAC has welcomed volunteers from around the world for over nine years.  Many of our former volunteers are artists who come to share their talents and skills with our members.  As part of our international volunteer program, artists will spend their time teaching in our after school art programs at various schools around Accra.  They can also help with administrative, marketing, and development initiatives at the JAC office in Accra.  As part of the program, volunteers will also have the opportunity to take private lessons from a variety of local artists in the area.  Areas include painting, drawing, textile design, tie and dye, batik printing, ceramics, sculpture, wood carving, African drumming, African dance, photography, and basketry.  Other specialties may be available upon special request, depending on the availability of local artists.

Program Costs & Duration:

Volunteer comments:

"Volunteering with JAC has changed my life in so many ways I never thought possible.   I absolutely fell in love with Ghana and it's beautiful and rich culture.  The children of JAC literally welcomed me with open arms and smiling faces and are so eager to learn art.  Being raised in an environment where there is little or no opportunity to learn fine art, I realized just how important the work and mission of JAC is for its members.  I was also able to work with professional artists during my placement, which has definitely helped me grow as an artists.  I would recommend this program to anyone who loves art, is open minded and looking for a great adventure, wants to learn more about African culture, and is ready to work with some eager and talented students!"

"As a volunteer for the Junior Art Club, I was really given the scope to involve myself fully into taking responsibility in the club's operations. This not only included spending time teaching various forms of art in schools around Accra, but also gave me the opportunity to devise the new projects, their aims and objectives. I was able to help coordinate an exhibition, assist in the appeal for funding and discuss the future events and success of the JAC. Aside from that I was introduced to a number of artists working in Accra who were great to work with as well as giving me a realistic insight into how artists and their work is perceived in Ghana".
